Summary

'TOKYO EVER AFTER' is about American teen Izumi Tanaka who, while going through a ho-hum senior year in her Northern California town, discovers that she is Japanese royalty。 Dubbed as 'The Princess Diaries' meets 'Crazy Rich Asians', it follows a young woman who finds herself caught between worlds, and between versions of herself - back home, she was never ‘American’ enough, and in Japan, she must prove she’s ‘Japanese’ enough。

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the alc of this title。One sentence review: I really enjoyed this book that felt like a modern take on the Princess Diaries but set largely in Japan。Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean centers around Izumi Tanaka, a Japanese girl living in the largely white ,rural town of Mount Shasta in California。 Through some sleuthing from her friends she discovers that her long lost father is none other than the Crown Prince of Japan。 And so the story starts。My thoughts:- I loved Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the alc of this title。One sentence review: I really enjoyed this book that felt like a modern take on the Princess Diaries but set largely in Japan。Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean centers around Izumi Tanaka, a Japanese girl living in the largely white ,rural town of Mount Shasta in California。 Through some sleuthing from her friends she discovers that her long lost father is none other than the Crown Prince of Japan。 And so the story starts。My thoughts:- I loved Izumi and her high school friends in Mt。 Shasta。 These girls have the best support group and are hilarious。- I actually have been to Mt。 Shasta City so I loved all of the references to the town。 - The overall plot of the story was pretty predictable but fun nonetheless。I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys stories centered around princess stories。 This story gives a fun, modern twist to a pretty standard story and provides some great Japanese representation at the same time。NARRATION: I really enjoyed the narration on this one。 The narrator helped bring the characters to life and kept things upbeat and fun。 。。。more

I was soooo excited for this book and I'm so glad I wasn't disappointed! This was everything I wanted and more。 Rich in Japanese culture, I was totally transported alongside Izumi as she learns she is actually a princess。 She comes to know her father and also assume the role in a monarchy and culture that she is still learning about。 She has to deal with the scrutiny of the press, and with a blooming romance between her and her guard。 This was fun, light, fluffy, and heart warming, and just so d I was soooo excited for this book and I'm so glad I wasn't disappointed! I am sure everybody knows the premise of this book。 It is a “Princess Diaries” kind of story。 Izumi finds out that she a long-lost princess and that her father is the Crown Prince of Japan。 With a story like this, I suppose you have to be prepared to suspend disbelief and just roll with the plot holes and gaps in logic。 This is also a YA book, so I am not the target audience。 Honestly though, I have just never really enjoyed stories that feature royalty。 It seems that most people love rich-peopl I am sure everybody knows the premise of this book。 It is a “Princess Diaries” kind of story。 Izumi finds out that she a long-lost princess and that her father is the Crown Prince of Japan。 With a story like this, I suppose you have to be prepared to suspend disbelief and just roll with the plot holes and gaps in logic。 This is also a YA book, so I am not the target audience。 Honestly though, I have just never really enjoyed stories that feature royalty。 It seems that most people love rich-people drama and royalty, but those are generally not themes that cause me to feel anything at all。 In the end, this was a cute story and I think that a lot of younger teens will like it。 I read it because it was Reese’s YA pick for Summer 2021and I tend to enjoy the YA that Reese chooses。 (The Firekeepers Daughter is likely going on my best of 2021 list。) For me though, this was just… a book that I read and will forget。 I do not really have any strong feelings about it at all。 。。。more

Can definitely see the cross between Princess Diaries, What A Girl Wants, and Crazy Rich Asians lol。 It was a quick, fun, cute read~The cartoonish side characters were a little difficult to get past for me, though? (ie the best friend with no personality outside of "get it grl! rah! ur dad's hot!" and the rich cousin who's all "let's drink! relax! i don't actually care about anything but me!")。 Then again, this element definitely made the book feel very 'teen', which might've been the point。 Oth Can definitely see the cross between Princess Diaries, What A Girl Wants, and Crazy Rich Asians lol。 It was a quick, fun, cute read~The cartoonish side characters were a little difficult to get past for me, though? None other than the Crown Prince of Japan。 After making contact with her father, her and her mother's lives change forever。 Can she make it as a princess in a country she's never visited? Some want her to fail and some want her to succeed。 In the end, everyone's life is changed。Oh, and her personal bodyguard is rockin' her fantasy world。 That's not going to be a problem。 Nope! Not at all。 。。。more

3。5 stars! I’m a sucker for the Lost Princess trope in a story, and it makes it even better that Izumi is apparently related to the Japanese monarchy。 I liked seeing her spend some time in Japan! I also liked the romantic trope in this story (which I am very much a sucker for as well)。 It was a fun read, though I didn’t necessarily get super swept up in the tale。(Oh, and my friend Alyx — I’ll link her when I’m on a computer — was totally correct about the What A Girl Wants vibes of this story!)
